Before You Waste Another Day in Disappointment Trying To Get Your Record Deal…
Today will not be the day.
Neither will tomorrow.
I would like to tell you to give up, but if I do that… well.
Give up. Because unless you are ready to starve, cry, curse, and compromise some of your deepest beliefs and possibly morals… then it is unlikely that you will reach fame with your music. I don’t just mean cry… I mean sit in the kind of deep depression that could possibly land you in a psych ward. Why? I’ll tell you.
Because unless you have found your way past the life barries that choke the SHIT out of your dream, then you won’t have enough time to work towards making your dream a reality. And what are those life barriers? Just one second…
I have taken a very hard look at myself and what Music Industry School should be about and I have to admit, I’ve fallen into many of the same traps myself. The only reason I can still sit in this chair and give you advice is because I have money that rolls into my bank account while I sleep; and I have the ability to do whatever the hell I want to do, when I want to do it. Monday I took the day off and took my wife to the movies to see Hulk. Sure I had my laptop with me and I corresponded with clients, but… I did it while I was sitting on a green park bench in the middle of Manhattan on 34th Street… and I had money in the bank.
See most people want to tour, sell merchandise, ride in the car, sign the autographs, deliver their music to thousands of people at a time but they forget one little thing… — you WILL pay an entry fee. I can’t tell you what that fee is but I can tell you that if it could be paid in cash; I highly doubt you could afford it. You need to get a LOAN.
And this is a fee that you have to pay financially, mentally, and physically… and you will still need a loan to pay this outrageous fee. You need to borrow energy, borrow ideas, borrow encouragement, borrow equipment, borrow help, borrow musical motifs, borrow trends and every tad bit of information you can in order to help yourself pay this outrageously high fee of entry.
It isn’t so much that the music god’s don’t like new music… it’s just that the level of commercial standards change on a daily basis; every time there’s an award show, everytime there’s a new news story, everytime a new album releases - the bar just gets higher and higher; and if you’re working a 9-5… you have to find ways to offset your time commitments so you can continue to increase your musical value; not by your standards - but by the standards of your audience…and there you have it.
That’s why a record deal is too expensive. It does NOT cost you money to get a record deal; but it does cost you.
So the biggest life barrier… is overcoming your daily chores and learning how to manage your abilities so that you can breakthrough the relationships, bills, equipment handicaps that anchor you down.
Here’s another way to say it. Get control of your life… It isn’t about the music so much. It’s about your life and your ability to control your life. I swear this is the biggest set-back and reason why most people will never make it… no matter how many courses they buy, no matter how many conferences, no matter how many A&Rs listen. If your life is spinning out of control and it’s driving you, then
DO NOT CHASE after a record deal.
IF you wake up tomorrow and you’re still struggling to figure out how to reach celebrityism, then ask yourself one question:
Does my daily life (hour on hour) push me closer or further away from my dream…and will my answer be the same tomorrow?
