March 7th, 2008 at 12:46 amI appreciate the lessons it was very insightful. Some of the same things that you talked about are things that I have been telling my musician freinds for sometime. I completely agree with the idea of building your own fan base and treating your fans as if they were part of something. The music business has changed so much since I started playing 29 years ago. I don’t beleive its all for the worse. When the computer age started inthe 90’s I was excited about it . I saw a future coming where the artists would have complete artistic control of thier music and was excited about. Now in the new century I see that coming to fruition. I loved the Idea of having that level control over what kind of style and substance I would be promoting. When I started out the record companys had a black eye from doining business in dishonest ways and If they are losing business now it’s their own fault. Sometimes the tighter you hold on to control the more it slipes thru your fingers. I know myself I have a clear way that I want to present myself to my fans. There were some guys I knew who went to the same church that I did. They builded a huge local fan base and the local people were in love with thier music and style. So they decided to go to Nashville-Big mistake. They went to Nashville and got a big record deal. Everything they did that got them their the record company changed. When they went there they had a nice len and mean street edge. By the time the record company got done with them they had short hair and they made them record in that shitty slick ‘Nashville Sound”. It ruined them as a group and alienated their fans. The funny thing is the people that made them do that probably didin’t even know how to play music. With stories like that I welcome the demise of the the big companys. I like it when “real” musicians get a chance to show fans that their is still great music played every day by people that truly have the chops. The internet has turned music into the the wild west were you actually have to be good to have a chance. Groups Like the Beatles are what inspired me to play music and most up and coming young musicians that I know are still inspired by “real acts” with integrity and creative ability. If you want to check out some real musicians check out my site called open mic world at http://www.dennisdowningmusic.com Thank you for all the information its good to hear from like minded people who uderstand whats really happening. March 8th, 2008 at 11:39 amI agree 100% with Ritch. He not only gave a true picture of the music industry (I thought no one was paying attention)but he gave his points and backed them up with facts! Most of what was said I had in the back of my mind but confirmation always feels good and has motivated me even more to bring back the art of music (hip hop for me). Because after all as stated by Ritch there is no variety in any Genre. The same songs are being played and in hip hop the same type of songs are being played. Music is an art just as painting is an art and Van Groh wouldn’t dare try to make something like Michael Angelo just to fit in. To each his own!!
Thanks guys
March 10th, 2008 at 12:14 amVery Good information,It’s so True that an Artist needs to develope There Statis on a Independent level, just as I have this is What I do for a Living and want stop until I get the Whole Worlds Attention-BigDru, Thanks for this Information!
March 10th, 2008 at 5:04 amThat was some of the most realist information I heard since I started my career in music. I definetly took notes and am going to use them as my developement guide to sucess in the Music Industry.
March 11th, 2008 at 10:27 amThe video is very on-point and detailed.I feel that the thing said in it will help me with my career. Its also a wake up call and perhaps a kick in the butt to strive harder than I have been and maybe I wasnt pushing hard enough.Thank you very much!
March 12th, 2008 at 5:48 pmMan that was pure power. The information in that interview should wake up any serious artist. I have been saying the same thing to a lot of the aritsts that I come in contact with and I have a hard time selling it to them. It is true that the old days are long gone. The artist has to get off of his or her crack and do the work. We have to hit the stage. We have to get out in the street, both phsyically and virtually through the net. There are no excuses. We all say that we hate our jobs. We say things like next year this. Next month that. But, are we taking the steps to make our dreams come true? Or, are we just blowing smoke up our collective a…. ? If you are an artist that has just watched this interview and you are still in a fantasy world, shame on you. You can wait around sniffing up Major Record Companies butt cracks if you want to. Not me. I’ll be to busy doing my thing well. They’ll come looking for me. And if they don’t, so what! I’ll still be making lots of money doing what I was put on this earth to do.
Another great one. Keep it coming. Keep it coming.
