Why SongSharpener is Great For Songwriting

We uncover similarities between songs in the Billboard Top 100 music charts and analyze these songs one by one to give you the hottest techniques used in songwriting, vocal production, music production, and stage performance. You'll have instant access to these fresh updated secrets on a bi-weekly basis.

EarTrends - Weekly Songwriting Tips for Songwriters

The one thing I encourage all songwriters to remember is that you are essentially competing against every song on Billboard's Top100. Even if you aren't competing for a spot, or for sales, you're competing in terms of quality. If your song fails to meet the quality standards in terms of style, trends, and marketability, your song has a very slow chance to spread to a wide audience that would potentially purchase your music.

EarTrends is an add-on to SongSharpener that allows you to get important song analysis that every songwriter and music producer in the music industry would want to know.

  • Song key: Start your song in the same key as another song on the charts, and with a few arrangements, your song will sound the same.
  • Song tempo: gives you the song tempo of every song on the charts. Extremely important. In general, stay between the slowest tempo and the fastest tempo.
  • Song analysis: gives you an analysis of the songwriting trends, music production trends in each song. (Most important since it will give you hints on how to style a similar song)
  • Chord Progressions: basic chord progressions that were used in the song. Of course if you use these, you can quickly make any song sound like a Top100, or combine progressions for unique flavor.
  • Songwriters & Producers: I generally like to know who's responsible on the production team since it usually leads to more useful information.
  • Similarities: pinpoints if a song is similar to any other songs currently on the charts during that point in time.
  • Market factors: because every song that makes the billboard is heavily biased towards - miss you / hate you / want you back / life happiness (or party track) / discovered you / sexual / or love you (appreciation), etc.
  • Format: verse/chorus/verse (ABA), or verse/verse/chorus/bridge, etc. (AABC)

Having this information immediately at a glance can be incredibly powerful especially if you're creating a song that needs to have wide appeal. You can pick any one of these points (which is obviously taken from a song that's currently on the charts) and get a head start.

I don't think it means your song will wind up on the charts, but it means your song will at least have parts of a guaranteed formula that will give your song wider appeal and sound more radio-friendly.

Cautions & Advisory:

If you over do it, you will sound like a clone of the song or songs you're looking at. Sometimes that's a good thing, depending on your specific situation. But if you're writing and creating songs blindly, you are at a huge disadvantage.

Eventually, I think you can reach a point where you know and can spot these trends automatically. But even then, this takes the guess work out of the research you should be doing anyway if you plan on writing/selling songs on a commercial level.
